Bengal Tales – Kyle Bradstreet

Class Years: 2002 and 2004
Degrees: B.A. English and M.A. Multidisciplinary Studies

Current Occupation: Writer/Producer

Kyle Bradstreet, B.A. '02, M.A. '04What is one of your fondest memories of Buffalo State?
My graduate thesis consisted of two components: one written (both creative and academic) and one film. One of the fondest memories I have of Buffalo State is shooting my thesis film in the stunningly beautiful Metcalfe Library in Rockwell Hall. The set increased the production value of my short film immensely and lent itself to the story very well. The cast and crew spent two late nights filming in that lovely space, and I remember every moment.

Were you involved with any on-campus organizations as a student?
I became an honorary member of the Theatre Department's Casting Hall. I was not a theatre major, but I worked closely with many members of Casting Hall in both casting and production on short films. I can't stress enough how much I appreciate the help they gave me.

How did graduating from Buffalo State shape your future?
After finishing my M.A. in Multidisciplinary Studies, I knew what I wanted to accomplish -- to be a professional writer. It took several years leading up to that point to realize that was my goal. After graduating, I felt prepared to take a huge risk -- move to New York City and dive in. I had a strong support group of professors at Buffalo State who I stayed in touch with as I worked my way towards publication, theatrical productions and, eventually, screenwriting. They encouraged me at every step, and I'm eternally grateful to them. (Thanks Karen and Gerry!)

What accomplishments have you achieved since graduating from Buffalo State?
I've had multiple plays produced in New York and Europe. My short fiction has been published in several literary journals, both online and in print. As a television writer and producer, I've received a Golden Globe, a Writers Guild of America and a Peabody Award for my work on the critically acclaimed series "Mr. Robot." I've also written for and produced several other TV series ("Berlin Station," "Copper," "Borgia," "The Philanthropist").

Do you have any advice for current students trying to achieve success after graduation?
The hard work truly does pay off. Don't be afraid of risks -- instead, embrace them. But if you find yourself uncertain and need time to reevaluate, step back and take that time. You'll know when and what is right for you. Lastly, treat yourself to really good coffee once in a while.
